In the heart of Daleville, Virginia, Brenda Young has been a cornerstone of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys for more than 15 years. Her journey from the restaurant industry to retail exemplifies dedication and a deep commitment to both her role at the Daleville store and her community.

Q: Can you tell us how long you’ve been with Goodwill?

A: I’ve been with Goodwill Industries of the Valleys for about 15 years. I started at the Melrose location and then moved to the Daleville store about 10 years ago.

Q: That’s quite a tenure! What initially drew you to Goodwill?

A: Before joining Goodwill, I worked at local restaurants, doing everything from preparing food to dishwashing. I’d been shopping at Goodwill for a while and thought it would be a great place to work. I loved the idea of helping others and being part of an organization that gives back to the community.

Q: Can you share what you enjoy most about working at Goodwill?

A: My favorite part of the job is training new people and meeting new people every day. I really enjoy interacting with our customers and helping them find what they need. Plus, training others and seeing them succeed is incredibly rewarding.

Q: How has Goodwill supported you in your career and personal life?

A: Goodwill has been fantastic in providing a stable and supportive work environment. The managers have been like family to me. I really appreciate the supportive work culture here. On a personal note, I moved to take care of my ailing mother, and Goodwill has been understanding and accommodating of my situation.

Q: How do you balance your responsibilities at work with your family life?

A: It’s been challenging, especially with my mother’s recent health issues. Goodwill has provided resources and flexibility that allow me to continue to work while caring for my mother.

Q: You’ve been with Goodwill for many years and have seen its impact. How do you feel about being part of an organization that gives back so much to the community?

A: It fills me with pride. Knowing that what I do helps others, from providing low-cost goods to supporting various community services, is incredibly fulfilling. I also love that my family is involved with Goodwill, as both shoppers and donors. It’s a great feeling to be part of something that makes a real difference.

Q: For those who might be considering a job at Goodwill, what advice would you give them?

A: I’d say if you’re looking for a rewarding job with a supportive team, Goodwill is a great place to be. The work environment is positive, and you get to make a real impact in people’s lives. Being dependable and willing to learn are key qualities that can help you succeed here.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience with Goodwill?

A: I really love what I do and the people I work with. Goodwill has been a wonderful place for me, and I hope others can find the same joy and satisfaction that I do in their roles.
