Our GoodStart Prisoner Re-Entry Program provides a level of structure and support to returning citizens that fosters confidence and skill building necessary for a successful transition to a stable productive life.

Roanoke Valley

Reconnecting with the labor force can be challenging for anyone. Add a criminal history to the scenario and it can seem impossible. At Goodwill’s GoodStart Prisoner Re-Entry Program, individuals with a criminal history, who want to work, are provided the education, training and employment assistance needed to gain apprenticeships, credentials, and sustainable employment in the areas of Manufacturing, Machinery, Information Technology, and others. The program provides a road map for participants to achieve a long-term goal of remaining attached to the legitimate workforce and a path to self-sufficiency.

To be enrolled in the GoodStart Prisoner Re-Entry Program*, you must be:

  • 25 years of age or older
  • Released from jail, prison or under supervision within 180 days (6 months) of enrollment
  • Qualified as low income
  • Never been convicted of a sex crime, other than prostitution

Services available through Goodwill Industries of the Valleys GoodStart Prisoner Re-Entry program include:

  • Education and training for certification in various fields like manufacturing and industrial maintenance, information technology, culinary arts, and others.
  • Coaching and supportive services
  • Job Search Support including resume development and interviewing skills
  • Employment and/or apprenticeship placement
  • Referrals to other community resources available to assist with a successful return to the community

The GoodStart Prisoner Re-Entry Program is offered to individuals living in the cities of Roanoke and Salem, the counties of Roanoke and Botetourt, and the Town of Vinton, and meet the above eligibility requirements. *The Goodwill® Adult Reentry Project is made possible with a grant award of $4.5 million, covering 92 percent of costs, from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. Eight percent of the Goodwill Adult LifeLaunch Reintegration Program activities and services will be supported with $373,275 in leveraged resources.

New River Valley

In the New River Valley, GoodStart provides opportunities for individuals ages 18-24 years of age to train for careers in truck driving or computer help desk support. To qualify, individuals must have been convicted of a juvenile or adult offense. GoodStart provides tuition for training, help with child care or transportation costs during training, paid internship opportunities and help finding a job.  For more information, please complete the short interest form by clicking here.
