The Community Solutions Center Culinary Arts Job Training ProgramGroup of culinary arts students

Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, in partnership with Feeding America Southwest Virginia (FASWVA), will provide Culinary Arts training to qualified unemployed and under-employed individuals. The training will consist of hands-on culinary training and soft skills employment training.

Students will learn basic culinary arts techniques such as knife skills, food safety, nutrition, tool and equipment use, and how to follow recipes and create menus. Also, students will learn and apply the skills necessary to take and pass “ServSafe Manager” certification, a nationally recognized credential on food safety.

The 12-week training program will be held in the new production kitchen at the FASWVA / Food Lion Feeds Community Solutions Center (2328 Melrose Avenue, NW, Roanoke, VA).

Culinary Arts Training Program Requirements

Applicants who wish to enroll in the Culinary Arts Training program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Possess basic literacy and math skills at an 8th-grade level
  • Speak English fluently
  • Have a legal right to work in the US
  • High School Graduate or GED (preferred)
  • Able to stand and work for 6 hours, able to lift 35 lbs, and able to perform frequent bending
  • Self-disclose criminal background/history*
  • Pass a drug screening
  • Suitability

Culinary Arts Training Interest Form

*Applicants will be asked to consent to a background check. Applicants will not be eligible for program participation if found guilty of violent criminal offenses, or if registered as a sex offender, or have a founded complaint on the Virginia Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry. Violent offenses include murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape, and robbery. Criminal records will be individually reviewed for suitability.

Community Solutions Center

The Community Solutions Center is a collaboration among several partners including FASWVA, Roanoke Police, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, and Northwest Roanoke community leaders. Funding supporters for the $1.4 million project include Food Lion Feeds and the City of Roanoke (CDBG grantor). This new facility will house several program areas including a production and training kitchen, which will be used to prepare meals for the food bank’s “Café to Grow” children’s food truck and host culinary job training courses. Other planned areas include a fresh foods market, an outreach space for Roanoke Police, and a community room for meetings and workshops.
